Life Before Smartphones

You crazy kids with your crazy gadgets!

Why, back in my day...
  • Phones had permanent wires;
  • Phones only had one ringtone-ringing bell tone;
  • Hanging up literally meant hanging up the receiver on a hook to end a call;
  • Want privacy?  Buy an extra long cord, go to the bathroom/closet/outside, and don't forget to close the door behind you;
  • We couldn't buy phones at a store...we had to lease them from the phone company;
  • Local calls were truly local...if the friend/family member you wanted to call was in a different town, even if it was in the same area code, it was a long distance call;
  • $0.25/minute for long distance calls was a steal!
  • Looking for a phone number? Google schmoogle!  "Let your fingers do the walking"; in other words, open up a paper directory;
  • Out of town directory assistance? 1-(area code)-555-1212...and yes, that was a long distance call;
  • ALL toll free calls were 1-800-xxx-xxxx only; no 888, 877, 866, 855;
  • Area code 976 numbers...awwwww yeeeeah!!! (Bow-chika-wow-wow!)
  • Some phones didn't have touch tone buttons...they had rotary dials.
...and you actually would hate people with zeros in their number...ugh, this guy's got zeros...
oh, screw that guy! -
